A Sunday afternoon robbery in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood left a 26-year-old man shot and scrambling to get himself to the hospital, according to police.
Officers said the man was in an alley in the 2600 block of East 79th Street around 1:15 p.m. when two men approached him during an armed robbery. One of the suspects pulled a gun and fired, hitting the victim in the left thigh. The man then got himself to Jackson Park Hospital, where he was reported in good condition. No one is in custody as detectives continue to investigate.
According to FOX 32 Chicago, the offenders demanded the victim’s belongings before one of them opened fire. The station, citing Chicago police, reports that Area Two detectives have taken over the investigation and that officers have not released descriptions of the suspects. The story, written by Lauren Westphal, was published Sunday evening.
As reported by CBS Chicago, the victim was struck in the left thigh and either walked or drove himself to nearby Jackson Park Hospital, where he was in good condition. CBS Chicago notes the two suspects fled on foot in an unknown direction and, as of Sunday night, no arrests had been announced. The outlet says Area 2 detectives are handling the case and urges anyone with information to contact authorities.
Pattern Of Robberies In South Shore
NBC Chicago documented a wave of seven armed robberies in July that included incidents on East 78th and East 79th streets, prompting police to ask the public for tips. FOX 32 Chicago has also reported multiple alerts and recent surveillance releases as the department works to identify suspects, signaling a pattern of robberies that has persisted across the summer and fall. Authorities have at times told residents to be vigilant and to preserve any video evidence for investigators. Community groups and business owners say the trend has heightened safety concerns on the South Shore corridor.
Anyone with information about Sunday’s robbery is asked to contact the Bureau of Detectives, Area 2 at (312) 747-8273 or submit an anonymous tip at CPDTip.com, per CBS Chicago and police guidance. Chicago police encourage witnesses to preserve surveillance footage and to call detectives rather than confront suspects. Area Two detectives are continuing to investigate and have not released further details about suspect descriptions or motives. We will update this report as authorities provide more information.
