Two men were wounded when a quiet South Side sidewalk turned into a shooting scene Saturday afternoon, according to Chicago police. The attack happened around 2:57 p.m., when someone opened fire as the pair stood on a sidewalk in the 8900 block of South Loomis, authorities said.
An 18-year-old man was shot in the buttocks, and a 22-year-old man was struck in the right arm. Both were taken to Christ Hospital and were listed in good condition, police said.
What police said about the attack
Chicago police told FOX 32 Chicago that two unknown men got out of a silver SUV, approached the victims and fired multiple shots before fleeing southbound on Loomis. The station reports that the victims were standing on the sidewalk when the shooters opened fire.
Police said no arrests have been made and Area Two detectives have been assigned to the case. Investigators are reviewing surveillance and witness accounts to identify the suspects.
Loomis corridor has seen repeated violence
Shootings along Loomis have recurred across different neighborhoods in recent years, raising concern among residents. In a November 2024 case, ABC7 Chicago reported that two people were seriously hurt on a different stretch of Loomis.
Police and block clubs routinely ask residents to preserve surveillance footage and share tips with detectives, according to area alerts from the Chicago Police Department.
How to help
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Bureau of Detectives, Area Two, or submit an anonymous tip through the department's tip portal, the Chicago Police Department says.
Detectives are continuing to collect evidence and review video, and authorities ask witnesses not to approach suspects and to share any footage with investigators. We will update this story as police release further details.
