Springfield Police made a significant arrest yesterday, taking a man into custody for possessing an array of narcotics and an illegal firearm. The Springfield Police Department, on their official website, reported the incident occurring on State Street, highlighting the efforts of their Neighborhood Stabilization Bureau led by Sergeant Runuel Bibby.

At around 4:20 p.m. to 4:40 p.m., officers were conducting surveillance and observed the suspect engage in several transactions believed to be drug deals. The suspect, identified by police as 39-year-old Jose Lopez-Santos, was then stopped and detained close by, at the intersection of State Street and Thompson Street. According to the Springfield Police news release, he was found to be carrying approximately 25 snap-caps of cocaine, 18 snap-caps of crack-cocaine, and 30 bags of heroin, along with $240 in cash.

The subsequent search revealed more than narcotics; Lopez-Santos was also carrying a loaded firearm in his backpack, which was quickly seized. The Springfield Police further disclosed that this firearm was not just illegal but also reported stolen from Holyoke—a detail only adding to the list of offenses Lopez-Santos would face.

Lopez-Santos was formally charged with a series of firearms and drug offenses, ranging from carrying a loaded firearm without a license to possession with the intent to distribute various classes of narcotics—and these are not his first run-ins with the law regarding violent or drug-related crimes.
