
St. Cloud's police department has initiated a high-tech Drone as a First Responder Program to escalate their public safety measures, a statement that spells advancement in the realm of emergency response. The program endows first responders with the ability to deploy drones swiftly across the city, offering real-time visuals to dispatchers and officers en route to emergencies, as reported by WFTV.
These drones, launched from two docking stations, including one at the police headquarters and the other at City Hall, elevate swiftly into the skies, cutting down the critical response times necessary during emergencies, and they are remotely controlled from police headquarters, according to a WESH interview with Police Chief Douglas Goerke.
The initiative not only promises a more efficient cover for fires and crime scenes but also has the potential to track suspects, locate missing individuals, and evaluate the gravity of ongoing emergencies. St. Cloud Police Chief Goerke emphasized the significance of rapid response, as detailed by WESH, "Seconds matter, lives matter. That's exactly why we are doing this program." The drones provide an advantage by being airborne in less than 20 seconds, thus setting a new timer for timeliness and effectiveness.
The program's budget projection stands at $890,000 over a five-year timeline with plans extending to incorporate more docking stations throughout St. Cloud. As detailed by WESH, this figure includes $172,000 for hardware and an annual $63,000 for services, but despite these costs, city officials are confident that their investment is reaping benefits by de-escalating situations and aiding in criminal apprehensions.
