In the effort to curb post-holiday waste, St. Johns County has initiated a free "Treecycling" program aimed at repurposing Christmas trees as mulch for county parks. Residents are encouraged to bring their real, undecorated Christmas trees to specified drop-off locations from December 26 through January 6, between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., announced the county on their social media channels. This environmentally conscious program seeks to diminish the influx of holiday refuse in local landfills.
According to an official social media announcement by St. Johns County, residents have several drop-off options available. These include the Ron Parker location near the Community Garden and Dog Park at 607 Old Beach Rd., Mills Field at 1805 Racetrack Rd., Davis Park at 210 Davis Park Rd., as well as two transfer stations at Tillman Ridge and Stratton Road. Residents should note that the transfer stations close early on Saturdays at 1 p.m. and are closed on Sundays.
Participation in this program is not only free but straightforward. To ensure the trees are suitable for mulching, trees must arrive clean and devoid of all decorations, including tinsel, lights, and ornaments. This measure guarantees that the resulting mulch is both organic and efficient for landscaping purposes throughout the community parks.
The county has communicated that for any inquiries or additional details, community members can contact the St. Johns County Parks and Recreation Main Office directly at 904-209-0333.
