The Missouri Attorney General’s office has indicated it is prepared to take action against any entities that violate the new age-verification rule, with legal consequences for noncompliance. The implementation of this regulation represents a notable approach by a state to address digital content access and child safety, and it may serve as a model for other states considering similar protective measures, according to the City of St. Louis.
In response to the city’s request, partners provided 285 emergency shelter beds, with surge capacity increasing the total to 345. These beds, together with 400 existing year-round shelters, were available to individuals on the night of last Sunday. The city is also coordinating with Bi-State Development, which is providing shuttles and operators to transport people from rally points to shelters.
Shuttles operated by Metro Call-A-Ride, staffed with drivers and outreach workers, are running from 5 to 7 p.m. between designated rally points and shelters. The rally points include the Urban League Women's Business Center in the North City Zone, Centenary United Methodist Church in the Central City Zone, and the Carondelet Park Tennis and Pickleball Courts in the South City Zone. At these locations, warming buses or indoor facilities are available before transport to the shelters.
The city is also addressing winter conditions to maintain safe passage. About 50 operators are deploying snowplows to keep streets clear. The Street Department’s snow plan prioritizes main routes first, followed by intersections and school entrances. If ice presents a significant hazard, additional vehicles are used to break it up. St. Louis’ strategy involves continuous clearing of arterial and secondary routes during normal snowfall and focuses on arterial routes during severe snowfall until conditions improve.
Walk-up shelters in St. Louis open at 6 p.m., including locations such as Peter & Paul - Jugan Shelter in the North City Zone and Sidney Shelter in the South City Zone, which accept walk-ins until 9 p.m. After that time, the United Way 211 Helpline provides guidance to available shelter options. The city continues to monitor these services and is prepared to expand its response as needed during the winter storm.
