St. Louis residents will miss skating at Steinberg Skating Rink this season, as the rink undergoes major renovations. According to the City of St. Louis, the rink, which opened in 1957, will reopen in fall 2026 as part of the new Glade development in Forest Park, a 22.5-acre area designed for year-round use.
While the rink will be closed temporarily, the renovations will maintain its large size and make it part of a versatile destination. A partnership between the City of St. Louis and Forest Park Forever will redesign the Midwest’s largest outdoor ice skating rink.
In an official announcement, Greg Hayes, Director of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry for the City of St. Louis, said, "Steinberg Skating Rink will be a wonderful, all-season destination and we are very excited about it for everyone." He added that the redesign combines tradition with innovation: "With this reimagined renovation, we are honoring the tradition of ice skating at Steinberg since 1957 while also creating a space for both activities and relaxation at the eastern end of Forest Park."
The redesigned plan goes beyond updating the rink. Visitors will be able to enjoy their favorite winter activities as well as a variety of other options year-round. "We cannot wait to welcome everyone to this new site," Hayes stated in an official announcement.
