A Sterling Heights man, 51-year-old Kevin Joseph Koldys, faces a felony charge for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and causing a fatal crash. On September 5, he lost control of his car in Commerce Township, causing a three-car accident that killed a 30-year-old man. Koldys was arraigned with a $25,000 bond, according to CBS News Detroit.
Koldys was driving north on M-5 when his Lexus RC went off the road, crossed through tall grass, and returned to the road, hitting a Chevy Trax. The Trax then collided with a Honda CR-V. Matthew John Szakal of Waterford Township, the Trax driver, died at the scene. The 64-year-old woman driving the Honda had minor injuries, as reported by ClickOnDetroit.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said "excessive speed and alcohol use" by Koldys contributed to a fatal crash, as per Audacy. Koldys was held in the Oakland County Jail after his arraignment. His next court dates are a probable cause conference on December 30 and a preliminary exam on January 7, 2026. He is charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
