Rush hour drivers in Sacramento encountered an unusual scene Wednesday afternoon when a stolen dump truck traveled across multiple freeways, followed by law enforcement vehicles and news helicopters, before crashing in a construction zone on eastbound U.S. Highway 50. The truck overturned, the driver was detained at the scene, and authorities reported that no one was injured. Significant traffic backups were reported through parts of Natomas and East Sacramento.
How the pursuit moved across freeways
Roseville police initially attempted to stop the dump truck near Fiddyment Road and Angus Road just before 4 p.m. The driver did not comply, prompting a pursuit that continued from Roseville into Sacramento County, where the California Highway Patrol assumed control.
LiveCopter 3 tracked the truck from above as it traveled south on I-5, then merged onto westbound I-80 shortly after 4:30 p.m., before moving onto eastbound Highway 50 around 4:40 p.m., KCRA reported. By shortly after 4:45 p.m., the truck had rolled into active construction lanes on Highway 50, creating a hazardous situation for nearby drivers.
Crash, arrest and suspect ID
The chase concluded near the 51st Street overpass on eastbound Highway 50, where the dump truck crashed and overturned onto its side. Witness video captured the vehicle weaving through lanes just before the crash, according to CBS Sacramento.
Officers approached the overturned truck and took the driver into custody. Video from the scene showed the man walking in handcuffs after the incident. CBS Sacramento identified him as 38-year-old Vinesh Pal.
Charges and booking
Pal was booked into the South Placer Jail on multiple charges, including evading police by driving against traffic, felony evasion, possession of a stolen vehicle, vehicle theft, and felony vehicle theft with prior convictions. CHP officials said the dump truck had been reported stolen from the Roseville area.
Similar chases in the region
This is not the first instance of a large vehicle leading law enforcement on a freeway chase in the region. Earlier this year, a stolen Amazon semi-truck prompted a similar pursuit along I-80. Incidents involving fully loaded commercial trucks can be significantly more dangerous than those with passenger vehicles, which is why multiple agencies typically coordinate quickly during such pursuits.
Traffic impact and what’s next
The crash blocked two eastbound lanes of Highway 50 while crews worked to upright and remove the overturned dump truck, causing major delays for the evening commute. Authorities said the investigation remains active and have not released additional details.
