Moises and Mariela Hernandez, owners of Coffee Crush and Coffee + Culture, have opened Tulum Mexican Cuisine, a seafood-focused restaurant in San Antonio’s Stone Oak neighborhood. The menu features family recipes, coastal flavors, and a mix of traditional Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes. Diners have been enjoying early tastings during the soft opening.
Soft opening and where to find it
Tulum began its soft opening on Thursday, November 20, according to MySA. The restaurant is located in the Tradehouse at Bulverde Marketplace near Loop 1604 and Bulverde in Stone Oak.
Menu, drinks and the room
Chef Yamett Martinez has built a seafood-forward, coastal-leaning menu that still calls on Mexico City comforts. Dishes include a tableside-poured sopa de tortilla, Ceviche Tulum (red snapper with citrus, pineapple, cucumber, watermelon radish, serrano, and a mezcal foam), flautas ahogadas, panuchos al pibil and scallops aguachile. The dining room leans into an upscale, beach-inspired look, complete with boho-chic natural-fiber chandeliers and a patio for outdoor seating. House margaritas, frozen or on the rocks, are $6 during happy hour from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and the Hernandezs have also brought over their customer-favorite flan from their coffee concepts for the dessert menu. These menu and design details, along with the couple’s plans for a grand opening later this month, were outlined by San Antonio Current.
Owners and a family recipe
Tulum is the Hernandezs’ first full-service restaurant after building a following with coffee and churro concepts. Mariela Hernandez called the menu “traditional Mexican cuisine, with a twist,” and Moises Hernandez said the flan is “a recipe passed down from my grandmother,” according to the San Antonio Current.
Where this fits locally
Tulum is part of a busy wave of new restaurants in North San Antonio this fall, debuting in November, according to MySA. The Hernandezs’ move into a full-service restaurant follows a local trend of small coffee and food operators expanding into sit-down dining.
Tulum remains in soft-opening mode as staff adjust, with a formal grand opening planned later this month. Diners can check local food coverage and the restaurant’s social media for dates and reservations.
