On a chilly December night, tragedy struck the 11900 block of N. IH-35 SVRD SB, when a man was shot and left without a name amongst the living. The Austin Police Department (APD) responded to a distress call on Wednesday, December 17, at approximately 11:21 p.m., which led them to the victim of a fatal shooting.
Local law enforcement found the victim with a gunshot wound to the head; the suspects had already fled the scene. In less than 10 minutes after the APD's arrival, the unidentified Hispanic male victim was pronounced dead, sending shockwaves through a community already grappling with violence. Within hours, a suspect, Quavone Easley, a 30-year-old Black male, was arrested in connection with the homicide, as the Austin Police Department reported.
Investigation into the incident unearthed a narrative as old as time – a confrontation over what was reported to be stolen property, a bicycle, in this instance. According to the preliminary findings, Easley confronted the victim over the alleged theft before shooting him in the head, an action that would set off a manhunt culminating with his capture by the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force. Following the issuance of a 1st Degree Murder warrant, Easley's freedom was quickly curtailed.
Austin, no stranger to the ravages of homicide, counted this as the 51st such incident of the year 2025. The Austin Police Department remains vigilant, encouraging anyone with additional information to contact them through various outlets, including 512-974-TIPS. Anonymous tips can also be shared through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program, offering a safer avenue for those hesitant to come forward directly. As echoed in the community's dive bars, churches, and barbershops, the pursuit of justice, however winding, continues – one tip, one arrest at a time.
