A double homicide in McKinney, Texas, ended tragically with the shooting of an armed suspect, who was later identified by officials as the son of the two victims. According to WFAA, former city manager Leonard Ragan, 73, and his wife Jackie Ragan, 72, were found dead in their home on Sunday morning. Officers responded to a welfare check that morning after family members had not heard from them for several days.
The situation unraveled after officers, to quickly gain entry, forced their way through a back door and discovered the couple in the living room. Police say they found their son, Bryce Ragan, 34, in a bedroom armed with a long gun. When he reportedly failed to comply with officers' commands to put the weapon down, a confrontation ensued that resulted in two officers discharging their firearms, striking Ragan multiple times. This account of the incident was confirmed by a news release from the police department.
Bryce Ragan was taken to the hospital for treatment, and his condition was not known immediately following the incident. In a statement yesterday night, McKinney city officials confirmed Leonard "Frank" Ragan served as the city's manager from 2008 to 2010. The investigation into the homicides and the officer-involved shooting is ongoing, but no officers were injured during the confrontation.
Neighbors of the Ragans, who police say lived in the home for over a decade, expressed their disbelief. "Very shocking. It's always something you never expect in your own neighborhood. You always hear about this on the news," said neighbor Nate Barrett, in a statement obtained by NBC DFW. The Texas Rangers are now to spearhead the investigation of the officer-involved shooting, while McKinney Police have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.
