A tense situation unfolded in Pittsburgh's Shadyside neighborhood yesterday, as a man engaged in gunfire with police officers after allegedly assaulting a woman and her dog. According to WPXI, the confrontation occurred in the 4700 block of Centre Avenue, where police were called to the scene around 4:12 p.m. following reports of an ongoing assault with a weapon.
After arriving, police found the man outside an apartment building where he was reportedly threatening the woman and her dog with a gun. When officers commanded the man to relinquish his firearm, he began firing at the woman and her dog. The gunman attempted to flee before finally surrendering, as reported by WTAE. The Allegheny County police were called in to take over the ongoing investigation, a standard procedure in such police-involved shootings.
A distressing detail emerged that the woman's dog had been shot during the altercation and is being treated for critical injuries. The woman herself, as per police, suffered injuries to her face during the assault and was promptly transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Ahead of the arrival of the police officers, the man had a confrontation with an employee from a nearby business, during which one shot was fired towards the employee, police say.
As the investigation continues, the identity of the gunman remains undisclosed to the public. No other injuries were reported from the chaotic scene.
