Ja'Kobi Gillespie, the standout guard for the Tennessee Volunteers, is shooting not just for points but also for a cause close to his heart. Gillespie, in partnership with the Garza Law Firm, has embarked on an altruistic three-pointer challenge: "Swishes for Wishes." For every three-pointer he nets, the Garza Law Firm pledges to donate $100 to Make-A-Wish East Tennessee, injecting wins on the basketball court directly into community support.
According to The Greeneville Sun, Gillespie's grandmother, a volunteer with Make-A-Wish East Tennessee, played a pivotal role in inspiring his involvement. "She's helping this little boy named Owen, he loves Toy Story, and now he has a Toy Story themed room," Gillespie shared. Seeing such a tangible impact on a child's life gave Gillespie all the impetus he needed to start the Swishes for Wishes campaign.
Gillespie, along with Make-A-Wish East Tennessee and Garza Law, is challenging companies and fans to pledge their support. Whether tied to points, assists, or three-pointers made by Gillespie, every bit helps fulfill the wishes of critically ill children in East Tennessee. In remarks obtained by WATE, Gillespie radiated determination: "I always wanted to give back to the community somehow, and this is a great way to do it."
With an impressive track record 33 three-pointers in just 12 games this season Gillespie's aim is quite literally rewarding. Fans are watching eagerly, not only as Gillespie's three-point tally goes up but also as donations rise with each swish of the net. As Gillespie has yet to notify Vols’ coach Rick Barnes of his increased three-point intentions, one can imagine the coach's imperative: "You better make them," Gillespie quipped in a statement shared by WVLT.
The “Swishes for Wishes” campaign ties Gillespie’s on-court performance to charitable giving, with donations generated by each three-point shot made. Organizers said the initiative supports granting wishes for children, using the athlete’s play to raise awareness and funds for the cause.
