Texas Governor Greg Abbott has proclaimed a significant financial boon for the state's rural health sector, with the federal government earmarking over $1.4 billion to enhance health care throughout rural Texas; the governor lauded the investment as a game changer for rural communities that often face obstacles in accessing comprehensive health services. In a news release obtained by Governor Abbott's office, he stated, “Rural Texans across the state will benefit from this historic federal investment. We will strengthen our rural hospitals, expand access to critical mental and physical health care, and help reduce chronic disease through wellness and nutrition initiatives."
According to the Governor Abbott's office press release, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has notified the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) that Texas will receive $281 million annually for five years through the Rural Health Transformation Program, part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act’s $50 billion allocation for rural health care. Texas submitted its “Rural Texas Strong: Supporting Health and Wellness” application in November and is now set to improve health care in rural areas.
Texas Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner Cecile Young thanked the federal government for the investment in increasing access to preventive and lifesaving care for people in rural communities. She emphasized that, through collaboration with local stakeholders, Texas is ready to implement solutions that will improve health care in these areas.
The funding allocation will be determined through a competitive process in which local governments, rural hospitals, federally qualified health centers, behavioral health providers, and other entities can apply. Funds may be used for chronic disease prevention, recruiting and training health care professionals, upgrading clinic and hospital equipment, and implementing cybersecurity measures. Applications will open in spring, with details available on the HHSC Grants webpage.
