Another Broward County basketball coach has found himself on the wrong side of the law. Donald Calloway, 50, was arrested after authorities say he exploited school facilities to personally profit from illicit basketball tournaments. Calloway, an assistant girls' basketball coach at Coral Springs High School, faces grand theft and organized scheme to defraud charges, as reported by NBC Miami.
The scheme appears to have been a collective effort. Previously, Blanche Ely High School boys' basketball coach Henry McNabb and Coral Springs High School girls' basketball coach Brenton Hankerson were arrested, suggesting a broader conspiracy. Calloway is accused of arranging to illegally rent out the gym "without following the proper channels" between April and June, thus bypassing school district procedures to secure his own agreements with private associations. He was reported to have directly engaged with Hankerson to facilitate rental payments, leading to him pocketing profits of $2,800, according to an NBC Miami interview.
Simultaneously, McNabb was implicated for renting out Blanche Ely's and Hollywood Hills High School's gyms for similar unauthorized events. The arrest affidavit suggests that Calloway rented out the gym while sidestepping the district's established protocols, which WSVN detailed in their coverage of the story.
Broward County Public Schools officials have stated that all three coaches "could be subject to termination," underlining the district’s stance against the misuse of school resources. The district's commitment to transparency and corruption eradication was echoed in a statement provided to NBC Miami, characterizing Calloway's arrest as a part of the ongoing investigations.
As of last night, Calloway was still being held at the Broward's main jail. The investigations are continuing, and it remains to be seen if further individuals will be implicated in the fraudulent activities.
