Times Square is preparing for its annual New Year’s celebration, which will include a large amount of confetti. A test was conducted Monday, during which multicolored confetti was released from the Planet Fitness Center Stage. The test involved only a portion of the 3,000 pounds of confetti planned to be released at midnight, according to CBS News.
Portions of the confetti will feature messages and wishes from people worldwide. Attendees can write their hopes on pieces of confetti at the New Year’s Eve Wishing Wall in Times Square Plaza. Digital submissions received after December 26 will be included in next year’s confetti release, as per ABC7NY.
The Times Square New Year’s celebration, known for its iconic ball drop since 1907, will feature the largest ball to date, decorated with crystals and LED lights. For the first time, the ball will be raised again after midnight, marking an additional highlight in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary.
Times Square also hosts the annual "Good Riddance Day," where participants symbolically release regrets from the past year, as reported by CBS News. Attendees write down and discard items representing challenges or negative experiences, such as financial struggles, self-doubt, or procrastination, as a way to mark a fresh start for the new year.
