Rob Reiner, director and actor, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Brentwood home Sunday, in what authorities are investigating as a homicide. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical aid call around 3:40 p.m. and made the discovery, according to KTLA.
The Reiner family, through a spokesperson, said, "It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner," and requested privacy during this difficult time, according to the Los Angeles Times and Variety. No suspects have been identified, and authorities are not currently pursuing any individuals in connection with the case, LAPD spokesman Alan Hamilton told 8NewsNow.
Tributes have poured in from high-profile figures. L.A. Mayor Karen Bass praised Reiner’s contributions to the city, while former President Barack Obama remembered his storytelling and dedication, saying he and Michelle were “heartbroken by the tragic passing Rob and Michele,” according to 8NewsNow and NPR.
Reiner’s decades-long career included on-screen performances, such as “Meathead” in All in the Family, and directing films like A Few Good Men, The Princess Bride, and This Is Spinal Tap. Earlier this year, Harry Shearer, who played Derek Smalls in Spinal Tap, described Reiner as a great collaborator and appreciator whose presence was “fun to be around,” according to NPR.
The LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division is conducting a thorough investigation, with increased patrols in Brentwood. Authorities have assured the community there is no immediate threat, though the reasons behind the incident remain unknown.
