A two-alarm fire broke out early this morning in the 700 block of West 34th Street in Hampden. According to reports from WBAL-TV, the Baltimore City Fire Department was called to the scene around 6:30 a.m. Residents nearby noted the intensity of the flames at the mixed-use building, which was vacant at the time.
No injuries have been reported as firefighters undertook the challenge of containing the fierce flames. The fire had already consumed much of the building when crews arrived, making their immediate task one of containment and protection of the surrounding area particularly challenging, given the proximity to the beloved Miracle on 34th Street holiday lights display, a seasonal attractor of local pride and visitors alike.
According to the Baltimore City Fire Department, while the cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials have kept a determined stance on the task at hand.
