In a decisive move to ramp up safety and compliance on America’s roadways, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has taken a hard line against substandard commercial driver’s license (CDL) training providers. Nearly 3,000 providers have been axed from the federal Training Provider Registry (TPR) due to noncompliance with regulations set by the previous administration. According to a press release from the Department of Transportation, these providers were not up to scratch in several areas, including falsified training data and inadequate facilities.

"This administration is cracking down on every link in the illegal trucking chain. Under Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg, bad actors were able to game the system and let unqualified drivers flood our roadways," said Duffy per the U.S. Department of Transportation website. In an effort to ensure safety, another 4,500 training providers have been put on notice to potentially correct their noncompliance issues. Secretary Duffy made it clear that negligent practices, which allowed poorly trained drivers to quickly work their way into operating vehicles like semi-trucks and school buses, will no longer be tolerated.

In addition to removal from the TPR, these providers face further consequences such as failing to meet curriculum standards, and if they do not possess the necessary documentations or refuse cooperation during federal audits, they may incur additional penalties. "If you are unwilling to follow the rules, you have no place training America’s commercial drivers. We will not tolerate negligence," FMCSA Administrator Derek D. Barrs stated on the U.S. Department of Transportation, underlining the administration’s commitment to roadway safety.

Training providers now on the chopping block have been given a 30-day window to demonstrate compliance with federal standards or face permanent removal from the registry. While on the TPR Proposed Removal List, these providers are mandated to notify all current and scheduled driver-trainees of their potential removal.
