The University of Utah is ushering in a new chapter for its athletics programs, anchored not just in running fast, jumping high, and scoring big, but also in modernized business acumen. The U announced the formation of Utah Brands & Entertainment LLC, designed to revamp how the school's sports teams operate financially. According to At The U, this subsidiary of the University of Utah Foundation will now manage key revenue streams and oversee brand-building efforts for the university's athletic department.
Utah's move comes amid a shifting collegiate sports landscape, where traditional economic models wobble like a loose football. House Settlement's mandate for revenue sharing with student-athletes, which kicked in on July 1, and the advent of unfettered transfers have upped the financial ante. "Revenue sharing with student-athletes began July 1, 2025, and will increase this gap significantly," as stated by At The U, acknowledging the mounting pressures on the financial playbook of college sports.
But the U is not playing defense when it comes to these challenges. It's pivoting to offense by forming a partnership with Otro Capital, a company with chops in the arenas of sports, entertainment, and media. This collaboration aims to strengthen the business operations of athletics, enhance the fan experience, and grow revenues, per the university's communication. Utah Brands & Entertainment will cover the spectrum of sports-related commercial activities, including sponsorships, ticketing, and licensing.
The heart of the matter, both for the athletic department and the university proper, is shored up by this move. Mark Harlan, Utah's Athletics Director, will chair the new company's board, ensuring decisions about sports, coaches, and student-athlete care stay in the hands of those who walk the campus grounds. "Decisions regarding sports, coaches, scheduling, operations, student-athlete care, and other athletics matters will remain solely with the Athletics Department," as per At The U in a show of commitment to athletic integrity.
