The University of Nevada, Las Vegas marked the two-year anniversary of a 2023 shooting that killed three professors and wounded a fourth, Fox5 Vegas reported. The incident occurred on December 6, 2023, when a failed teaching applicant opened fire inside Beam Hall, which reopened last summer following enhanced security measures.

Ethan Phui, a UNLV finance major who was present during the Beam Hall shooting, shared his experience in an interview with News3LV. “The alarms go off. Panic erodes. It was like a flood of individuals just running down the hallways, running around me. I felt safer going and hiding back in my classroom,” Phui said, recalling the chaos.

Phui, now a sophomore, described campus tributes for the fallen professors—a garden and murals—as symbols deserving recognition. “They are the ones that deserve to be recognized, and that symbol hopefully stays there as long as it should be because it is forever a part of UNLV history,” he told News3LV.

Phui told News3LV that the Beam Hall tragedy helped him feel more connected to the UNLV community. “I think before coming into this school, I felt very alone; I didn't feel very connected to the community. It sucks that it took such a tragic experience for UNLV to really connect kind of forcibly, but it did. I got a lot of help from people I would have never expected,” he said.

A ceremony honoring those affected by the Beam Hall shooting is scheduled for 10 a.m. at UNLV’s Donald Moyer Amphitheater. Fox5 Vegas will stream the event live for those unable to attend in person.
