Authorities in Ventura County have cracked down on a series of cargo thefts that have been plaguing UPS delivery vehicles over the past few months, resulting in five arrests. The “Operation Return to Sender” led by the Ventura County Organized Retail Theft Task Force nabbed Los Angeles County residents identified as Herson Danilo Gutierrez-Ferrufino, Chris Justin Ortiz, Alejandro Andres Delgado-Mera, Leivin Giovanny Vera-Diaz, and Ever Lisandro Lopez, who are all facing multiple felony charges. According to a news release from the task force, the suspects collectively represent an estimated $70,000 loss to UPS through their alleged thefts.
The arrests, which went down on November 14, resulted from a comprehensive investigation with search warrants executed at three Los Angeles locations and subsequent arrests, including identifying and capturing two further suspects through additional surveillance. Gutierrez-Ferrufino, Ortiz, Delgado-Mera, Vera-Diaz, and Lopez are currently behind bars in the Ventura County Jail on unrelated charges, while several more suspects remain on the loose, but their apprehension seems imminent. The Task Force, formed on the back of a California Retail Theft Prevention Grant Program, works closely with all Ventura County law enforcement agencies in a bid to thwart the estimated $10 million annual losses from various forms of organized retail theft, including cargo heists.
The suspects have been slapped with charges for grand theft, conspiracy to commit a crime, and possession of burglary tools, per the info provided in the Ventura County District Attorney's Office statement. This specialized unit, represented by detectives from varied Ventura County agencies, is resolutely focused on stanching the bleed of retail, vehicle, vehicle parts, and cargo theft, which significantly jeans local businesses and adversely affects both residents and visitors. The collaborative efforts showcase an ever-increasing drive to secure the safety and well-being of the community by putting a stop to these retail-related crimes.
