Human remains discovered in a Volcano forest this summer have been identified as a man who vanished from the same rural community nearly ten years ago. Hawai‘i Island police say DNA testing confirmed the remains belong to 50-year-old Eddie Steve Seenarine, closing the loop on a long-unresolved missing person case.
Discovery and Identification
In June, officers were called to a forested area on the 11-3800 block of 6th Avenue in Volcano, close to where Seenarine lived, according to the Hawaiʻi Police Department. Human skeletal remains were recovered and later matched to Seenarine through DNA comparison.
Police say both a forensic pathologist and a forensic anthropologist conducted separate examinations of the remains and found no traumatic injuries and no indication of foul play. The case was documented under report number C15037272.
Timeline of Disappearance
Seenarine was reported missing on Dec. 25, 2015, and was last seen in the Volcano area on Sept. 30, 2015, as reported by Big Island Now. The outlet also noted that the remains were found in close proximity to his residence.
What Investigators Are Asking
The Area I Criminal Investigation Section is continuing to handle the case, and police are still asking the public for any information that might help fill in the gaps about Seenarine’s disappearance, the department said. The press release also directs the public to the department’s Unsolved Homicides summaries for additional background, the Hawaiʻi Police Department added.
