A late afternoon ride on Waianae Valley Road turned devastating Saturday when a 49-year-old man lost control of his motorcycle, crashed, and was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition, authorities said. Emergency crews treated him on the roadside and determined he had suffered multiple injuries, including a serious head wound, before transporting him for further care. Honolulu police and traffic investigators shut down the stretch of road while they worked the scene.
What First Responders Say Happened
According to KHON2, the collision happened at about 4 p.m. when the rider lost control of his motorcycle and was thrown onto the roadway. The station reported that responders stayed on scene as investigators looked into whether speed or road conditions played a role in the single-vehicle crash.
Critical Injuries And No Helmet
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services told Hawaii News Now that the 49-year-old suffered multiple injuries, including a head injury, and was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Paramedics said the rider was not wearing a helmet when crews arrived and provided life-saving care at the scene.
A Crash In A Deadlier Year On The Roads
The crash comes as state officials continue to warn about a rise in traffic fatalities that disproportionately affects vulnerable road users. Gov. Josh Green signed an executive order in September to address rising traffic deaths and strengthen protections for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists, according to the Office of the Governor.
Helmet Laws And A Stark Reminder
Hawaii law requires safety helmets for riders under 18 but does not mandate helmets for most adult motorcyclists, per Hawaii Revised Statutes §286-81. A CDC-backed review has found that helmet use can cut the risk of fatal injury by roughly 42 percent and the risk of head injury by about 69 percent, underscoring how much protection a helmet can offer even in states where it is not required for many adults.
Police Seek Witnesses As Probe Continues
Honolulu police said the Traffic Division is investigating the single-vehicle crash and did not immediately release the rider's identity. Authorities asked anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have video to contact the Honolulu Police Department, according to KHON2.
