The city gears up for the annual National Christmas Tree Lighting happening tomorrow, December 4, 2025, and with the celebration comes an array of traffic adjustments. The District of Columbia is set to glow with festivity, yet commuters should brace for significant impacts on the streets surrounding the event. Accordingly, the Metropolitan Police Department has released a comprehensive traffic advisory, noting that parking restrictions and street closures will be implemented throughout the day.
From 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., emergency no parking regulations are to be posted along streets including 17th Street from Pennsylvania Avenue to Constitution Avenue, NW and several others. Additional closures will impact 17th Street, 15th Street, and parts of Constitution Avenue from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. as the preparations ramp up and the ceremony gets underway, as reported by the Metropolitan Police Department.
Those planning to attend the tree lighting should be aware that vehicular access will be more restricted as the evening progresses. Starting at 5:00 p.m., a more extensive list of closures will take effect, impacting 17th Street from H Street, NW to K Street, NW, and a several blocks, as noted in the Metropolitan Police Department report. Public transportation options may prove to be a wise choice for those heading to this holiday gathering, aiding in a smoother, and perhaps merrier, travel experience.
