A quiet Monday afternoon on San Antonio's West Side turned chaotic when a teenager reportedly shot himself inside an apartment bedroom, according to police. The call came in around 1:45 p.m., and first responders arrived to find a boy in his late teens with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition while homicide detectives moved in to lock down the scene and start sorting out what happened inside the unit.
As reported by WOAI, officers were called to an apartment complex near the corner of West Sunshine Drive and Bloomfield Drive. First responders found the teen in a bedroom, and medics transported him to a hospital in critical condition. According to the outlet, homicide investigators were “going over the scene to verify exactly what went wrong” as detectives tried to piece together how the reported accidental shooting occurred.
West Side Shootings Keep Piling Up
This is not the first time this year that West Side apartment complexes have been at the center of serious gun violence. In late May, KSAT reported that a man was critically injured in a shooting outside a West Side complex. Then, in late September, another KSAT report detailed a separate apartment shooting that left a man dead and led to a murder charge.
Those back-to-back cases, along with Monday's shooting, have put an uncomfortable spotlight on safety issues at several complexes across the area.
Detectives Still Working the Case
Police have not released the teen's name or said whether anyone might face charges in connection with the incident. Officials have also not publicly shared more about how the teen got hold of the gun or what led up to the shooting.
