Last Friday, 34-year-old Jose Sanchez-Valdez of Winters was arrested after a standoff with police. Officers responded to the 500 block of East Street around 6:24 p.m. after a call that he had threatened to shoot his mother. Sanchez-Valdez, a convicted felon, had barricaded himself in his home, leading to a standoff that lasted several hours, as reported by FOX40.
Officers first spoke with the mother away from the home and confirmed the son's threat. Sanchez-Valdez stayed inside with two other family members, who were later told to leave. Believed to be under the influence, he refused to exit and told officers he would not be caught. The Yolo Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiations Team, Woodland Police K-9 units, and Yolo County SWAT Team responded. Officers were initially unable to communicate with him and used "flashbang" devices and tear gas to get him out of the home, as detailed by CBS News Sacramento.
Sanchez-Valdez surrendered around 11:17 p.m. after several hours of standoff but continued to resist and spit on officers, as per FOX40. A search of his home found a BB gun, a Glock replica airsoft gun, and live ammunition. He faces charges including felony criminal threats, resisting arrest, being a convicted felon in possession of ammunition, and a misdemeanor for brandishing an imitation firearm. He was booked at Yolo County Jail.
