Early Thursday morning, a Washington State Patrol (WSP) vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a pickup truck in Pierce County. The incident occurred on the 11400 block of Steele St. S., as reported by the Pierce County Sheriff's Office, who also confirmed the response of deputies to the scene at around 8:50 am.
Information released by authorities states that a WSP Sergeant trapped in the patrol car sustained minor injuries following the collision. The driver of the pickup truck, a female, was reportedly unharmed in the incident. There were no other vehicles or individuals involved in the collision. According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office, the preliminary investigation suggests the woman was texting while driving, which caused her to drift into the oncoming lane, leading to the accident.
The WSP Sergeant involved was later transported to a local hospital and remains in stable condition with injuries described as minor. The driver of the pickup truck stayed at the scene and cooperated with deputies. She has since been cited for negligent driving and was released pending further investigation.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit is currently leading the inquiry into the specifics of the crash, and its findings will be forwarded to a prosecutor for review. The Pierce County Sheriff's Office has not commented further on potential charges or subsequent legal action following the incident.
