A routine traffic stop led to a significant drug bust on Interstate 17 near Middle Verde Road, south of Lake Montezuma, where deputies from the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office discovered approximately 70,000 fentanyl pills. The incident, which unfolded on the afternoon of November 19, involved a vehicle carrying two adults and two children, both under the age of six. After a K9 unit signaled the potential presence of narcotics, a search of the car revealed the concealed contraband, 12News reported.
The driver, identified by authorities as Jose Urquianeriz, was arrested along with another unnamed adult also found in the vehicle. In a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office announced that Urquianeriz faces multiple charges including possession, sale, and transportation of narcotic drugs, in addition to child abuse. Found with two young kids during the bust, the YCSO emphasized the peril possible reckless behavior like this could expose children to.
The Yavapai County Sheriff, David Rhodes, expressed his dismay at the situation, highlighting the apparent disregard for the safety of the children present. "The fact that a suspect was allegedly engaged in felony drug trafficking with two small children present highlights a dangerous level of recklessness and disregard for life," Sheriff Rhodes said, according to a statement given to 12News.
Details surrounding the unnamed adult taken into custody alongside Urquianeriz, as well as potential charges they may be facing, have not been disclosed by the authorities. Discovered during the traffic stop, YCSO has confirmed that the investigation into the seizure of the 70,000 fentanyl pills remains active. They have urged anyone with information to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
