A tragic turn of events marred New Year's Eve in Fort Lauderdale as a 17-year-old boy was fatally shot just before the dawning of 2026. The incident occurred outside a CVS along Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard, moments before the year came to a close. Officers responded to reports of a possible shooting late Wednesday night, where they found the victim, identified as Joshua Gipson Jr., suffering from a gunshot wound, according to WSVN.
Witnesses reported confusion and panic as shots rang out. "I heard another shot, a couple of shots, I believe about five total," Jeff Saylor told WSVN. Amid the mayhem, another, witness, Bob McDonald expressed the fear the incident instilled, indicating the sounds were unmistakably gunshots and not a festive fireworks display. Paramedics swiftly transported Gipson, who was a local football player and had plans to attend Virginia Tech, to Broward Health Medical Center. However, he succumbed to his injuries soon after.
The Fort Lauderdale Police are investigating the shooting, which they believe to be an isolated event. A witness detailed to Local 10 News that an argument between two people may have led to the fatal shooting which Gipson was tragically caught in the crossfire. Another witness echoed this, stating that “There was 20, 30 kids out here maybe, at least.”
Gipson was remembered by a woman, close to the family, for his bright personality. "He was a good boy, good person, a good big brother, loving, caring, everything. Literally he’s like a ball of sunshine," she told Local 10 News. The victim's mother and her friend had been watching a virtual church sermon as the evening's festivities turned tragic, hoping to welcome Gipson back home with a meal. Instead, they received a call about the shooting and rushed to the hospital.
Authorities are urging anyone with additional information regarding the shooting or the gunman’s whereabouts to contact Detective J. Sanchez of the homicide unit at 954-828-4900 or call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Witnesses can remain anonymous, and may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.
