Eight individuals sustained injuries in a Brooklyn apartment building blaze earlier today, with some unable to evacuate due to illegally installed window bars, compounding the already dire situation. According to sources speaking to PIX11, the fire at 6201 13th Avenue in Borough Park saw one person, a 40-year-old, suffer cardiac arrest amidst the chaos.
Authorities explained that three people found themselves trapped and were unable to reach the fire escape as the bars, which were mounted unlawfully on the outside of the windows, blocked their path to safety. Firefighters braved through rooms ablaze to rescue those trapped. As per city regulations, VIN News reported that window guards are mandatory in properties with three or more apartments housing children under the age of 10, but such bars must not be installed on windows that are designated exits in emergency scenarios.
