Starting next week, ADA curb ramp improvements will commence in Pendleton as part of a larger initiative to make eastern Oregon's street crossings more accessible for everyone. This work, detailed in a recent bulletin by the Oregon Department of Transportation, represents Phase 2 of a five-phase project poised to enhance public walkways.
Construction kicks off on Dorion Avenue at SW 12th Street and will push northeast toward downtown, focusing first on the south side before shifting to the north side, then moving to Emigrant Avenue. Daily operations are expected Monday through Thursday, signaling a week of daytime labor, lane shifts, and some traffic snarls. Notably, all local businesses will stay open, and pedestrian pathways will be maintained, though the schedule could shift as the work progresses.
In a statement obtained by ORDOT, the agency explains that there is a sequence to their approach. Some street corners are queued for upgrades first due to their readiness for construction, while others require more preparatory work or additional permits before the improvements can commence. Each location comes with its unique set of challenges, and this, in turn, impacts the order of operations.
ODOT has detailed future phases, with Phase 4 (23757) slated for summer 2027 and 2028, and Phase 5 (23758) expected to start in fall 2027, continuing into the following year. These upgrades aren't simply for show; they're critical for enhancing mobility for those using wheelchairs, walkers, strollers, and bicycles – essentially anyone who needs a smoother transition from sidewalk to street, and vice versa.
The importance of ADA ramps cannot be overstressed – they are a foundational element in creating an inclusive urban environment. For those who wish to delve deeper into the endeavor, ODOT's ADA webpage offers comprehensive insights. As the project unfolds, community members are encouraged to spread the word and share email updates to keep neighbors in the loop about the ongoing improvements in Pendleton, as per the ORDOT.
