Tensions briefly flared on the streets of Alhambra earlier this week when local police found themselves positioned between federal agents and members of the public during what appeared to be a fraught interaction. Details from the event surfaced after a social media post went viral, highlighting the police department's involvement in the incident. In response, the Alhambra Police Department released a statement on their Facebook page acknowledging their officers' role in diffusing the situation.
According to the department's post, Alhambra officers were dispatched at 9:39 am on January 19th to a location where a vehicle was being followed too closely by another – the latter running red lights and engaging in illegal U-turns. The scene unfolded at Garfield and Valley, where the police, stationed between the two vehicles, helped de-escalate the encounter. Both parties eventually dispersed shortly after the police's arrival, with officers leaving five minutes later and asserting, "Our officers had no prior knowledge that Federal agents were in the City".
Nevertheless, community concern had been piqued, leading to the impression that immigration enforcement was at play in the incident. To address these apprehensions, the Alhambra Police Department was quick to clarify that "no immigration enforcement was taking place at the scene". This comment aims to reassure the public of the department's continued compliance with the California Values Act (SB 54), which prohibits local law enforcement agencies from using resources to further federal immigration enforcement.
