An Ann Arbor man has succumbed to injuries from a fire that broke out over the weekend in his apartment. Kevin Chatman, 68, was rushed to the University of Michigan Hospital following a blaze at the West Arbor Apartments on the 700 block of North Maple Road last Saturday. CBS News Detroit reports that he was initially in critical condition but unfortunately passed away.
The incident has prompted a detailed investigation by the Ann Arbor Fire Department, which believes the fire started accidentally. Identified as originating from a chair that Chatman had been seated in, the fire investigators suspect the cause might have been a malfunction of the chair or "unintentional human intervention, possibly smoking-related," according to the fire department's findings. In a statement obtained by FOX 2 Detroit, Chatman was removed from the home by a good Samaritan before the firefighting teams reached the scene.
Equipped with functioning smoke detectors and a sprinkler system, Chatman's apartment could contain the fire until the arrival of the emergency services. As a result of these protective measures, the fire was contained largely to the apartment of origin, details from MLive clarify. This marks the city's first fire-related fatality since January 8, 2024, indicating a poignant interruption to a period devoid of such tragedies.
The community acknowledges the bravery of the individual who rescued Chatman, with plans in motion by the fire department to honor their heroism. "The bystander who pulled him out will be formally recognized for their heroic efforts," according to officials cited by CBS News Detroit. As the investigation continues, the department extends, "our sincere condolences to Mr. Chatman's family and loved ones during this difficult time," reiterating the cost in human terms of such unexpected calamities.
