A routine Thursday evening in Arden-Arcade turned chaotic when a crash in a busy shopping-center parking lot was followed by gunfire, leaving two people injured and an overturned vehicle near Fulton Avenue and Hurley Way.
Crews with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District arrived just after 5:30 p.m. to find a crash scene that had quickly turned into a crime scene. Deputies wrapped the shopping-center lot in yellow tape, and at least one vehicle was discovered on its roof. Both people hurt in the incident were taken to area hospitals, with one victim reported in critical condition.
It got even more tense for first responders. The fire district told KCRA that its first-arriving engine was actually struck by gunfire and damaged, though no firefighters were hit. Sac Metro Fire said crews were simultaneously trying to treat patients and stay safe, and confirmed that one person was critically injured in the crash while another suffered injuries of unknown extent. Both were transported to nearby hospitals.
Video from LiveCopter 3 captured a wide law-enforcement and fire perimeter stretching around the parking lot, with the overturned vehicle clearly visible. Reporters on the ground observed at least one person detained as deputies and officers locked down the area.
