The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is actively addressing the shortage of truck parking spaces along interstate freeways with a new lot that recently opened at the Sunset Point Rest Area. Located conveniently on Interstate 17, nestled between Black Canyon City and Cordes Junction, this expansion is crucial for the throngs of commercial vehicles that regularly vie for parking in an area known to frequently reach capacity.
Adding to the existing 27 truck spaces, the ADOT project has provided 19 new spaces, a decision spurred by the growing demands of the trucking industry to accommodate more vehicles. According to an article from ADOT, the $4.1 million investment enhances the rest area with modern amenities such as waterless vaulted toilets and shaded ramadas. Notably, the new parking lot uses a gravel foundation with an integrated grid, a cost-effective alternative that aims to be just as durable as asphalt but for about half the price.
This initiative is part of a larger statewide plan that ADOT cooked up after compiling a 2023 Statewide Truck Parking Implementation Plan, which included public input and close collaboration with the trucking industry to pinpoint the areas most in need. The plan sets forth to systematically add several hundred truck parking spaces across seven rest area sites on key interstate routes within Arizona.
More developments are on the horizon, with ADOT's roadmap promising additional parking to unfold within the next year at four other rest areas. The I-40 Parks Rest Area will come back online with a total of 39 truck spaces, and down the path, the I-17 Christensen Rest Area shall follow suit, providing dedicated truck parking once again. Further expansions include the I-10 Burnt Wells Rest Area, plus the I-40 Meteor Crater Rest Area, together promising to add a significant 258 new spaces to the mix. The article from ADOT reports that these enhancements are set to materialize between late 2026 and winter 2027.
Truckers and interested parties can review study documents and the proposed new parking locations on the official study website, further demonstrating the department's commitment to transparency and dialogue with the trucking community. The expansion is already making strides, with the recent opening of 57 new spaces at the Haviland Rest Area on I-40 near Kingman, shedding light on the efforts made to support the vital backbone of interstate commerce.
