In her recent State of the State Address, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs outlined a series of priorities aimed at upholding what she describes as the "Arizona Promise," a commitment to providing a bastion of security, opportunity, and freedom for the state’s citizens. The governor’s address included proposals ranging from tax cuts to a focus on housing affordability, with a particular emphasis on the pressing issue of water conservation amidst drought concerns.
According to a transcript from the Office of the Arizona Governor, Governor Hobbs underscored her administration's achievements over the past year, including economic growth through job creation and significant investments in large corporations such as TSMC. Despite these successes, Hobbs acknowledged the financial struggles still faced by many Arizonans and recommitted to efforts aimed at making everyday life more affordable for them.
One of the Governor’s key announcements was the introduction of the Middle Class Tax Cuts Package. Hobbs called for immediate action, stating, "Put the Middle Class Tax Cuts Package on my desk immediately. I’ll sign it." She explained that this tax cut would put more money into the pockets of Arizona families, aiding them in managing cost-of-living expenses such as food, child care, and utilities.
The address also paid homage to the state’s heroic firefighters and criticized the federal government's decision to deny emergency assistance for communities affected by floods in Globe and Miami. Hobbs vowed to fight for these communities, reinforcing the need for state-level initiatives to combat what she views as inadequate support from Washington, D.C.
Toward securing Arizona’s water future, Governor Hobbs highlighted actions such as establishing the Willcox Active Management Area and terminating state land leases with Fondomonte. She announced the creation of a new Active Management Area for La Paz County to protect local water supplies. The Governor criticized the ongoing Colorado River negotiations and promised to continue fighting for the state’s water rights, saying, "I will keep putting Arizona first and fight for the water we are owed."
Hobbs equally dedicated energy to discussing housing affordability and announced a new Housing Acceleration Fund aimed at building more homes quickly. The Governor hopes this investment will help counteract the rising housing prices and make the dream of homeownership more attainable for working-class Arizonans.
Throughout her address, Governor Hobbs reaffirmed her commitment to improving the lives of citizens while denouncing partisanship and calling for collaborative action regardless of political ideology. "As elected officials, we have a responsibility to deliver what matters most to Arizona families: security – security that protects our communities, our pocketbooks, and our dreams for the future," Hobbs told the Office of the Arizona Governor.
