Arizona State Representative Leo Biasiucci introduced House Bill 2839 to help families manage grocery costs by exempting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program- and Women, Infants, and Children-eligible food items from local city and town taxes. The bill directs municipalities to avoid imposing transaction privilege taxes, or their equivalents, on these essential goods, regardless of who purchases them, according to the Arizona House of Representatives.
Biasiucci supported the measure by referencing Governor Hobbs, stating, "Governor Hobbs said she wants to lower taxes for hardworking Arizona families." He emphasized the importance of promptly acting on this promise to ease financial burdens for families in need, as reported by the Arizona House of Representatives.
Representative Leo Biasiucci of the Arizona House of Representatives, chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and member for the 30th District, said of HB 2839, "Taxing SNAP and WIC food purchases is wrong. These are necessities, not luxuries." He described the bill as a test of Governor Hobbs' commitment to tax relief, stating, "If the Governor is serious about lowering taxes, this bill should be an easy yes. If she vetoes it, that will speak volumes." The bipartisan bill would exempt SNAP and WIC food purchases from state taxes to provide financial relief to families.
