In response to the bitter chill, Arlington warming centers and overnight shelters will swing open their doors from Jan. 23 through Jan. 27 to shield residents from forecasted freezing temperatures. A citywide plan, fueled by a federal emergency shelter grant, triggers these sanctuaries when the mercury plummets to 39 degrees or below for over four consecutive hours at night.

The Salvation Army at 712 W. Abram St., opening its doors at check-in times between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. starting Jan. 23, will serve breakfast and has a capacity for 30 people, according to the City of Arlington. With police drop-offs accommodated after hours, those seeking refuge from the cold can find solace through Jan. 27, when the facility closes at 9 a.m.

Similarly, First United Methodist Church on 407 N. Mesquite St. will host people checking in from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a threshold temperature of 32 degrees activating their shelter policy. With the same hospitality as The Salvation Army, they can host up to 20 individuals.

Nations Church Arlington, located at 1013 W. Park Row Drive, will act as a dual warming center and overnight shelter commencing noon Friday, continuously until 8 a.m. Monday. The site promises meals throughout the day for up to 40 guests, as per the city's announcement. For the animal companions of those without a roof, Arlington Animal Services Shelter will consider them, space permitting, at 1000 SE Green Oaks Blvd.

Arlington's public libraries and recreation centers also extend a warm welcome in designated areas during regular hours. First United Methodist Church will provide additional space from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on set dates, ensuring a reprieve from the cold. Any questions can be directed to The Salvation Army at 817-860-1836 or Arlington Animal Services Shelter at 817-459-5898 to secure assistance for pets or further shelter information.
