Atlanta pastor Jamal Bryant spoke to his congregation about his wife's outfit after it received public attention. Dr. Karri Turner Bryant wore a black-and-nude lace illusion gown at the United Negro College Fund's Mayor's Masked Ball on December 20, which prompted discussion about appropriateness and the image of church leaders. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, during a New Year's Eve service at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, Bryant said that broader issues were being overshadowed by attention on the gown.
Pastor Bryant stated that many critics did not take into account that the event was intended to raise funds for historically Black colleges and universities. Speaking to the congregation, he said he purchased the dress and supported his wife's choice. USA Today reported that his remarks received applause. Bryant has consistently affirmed his support for his wife's fashion decisions amid public discussion.
Turner Bryant also addressed the discussion, noting her appreciation for her husband's public statements. Sharing a clip of his remarks on the church's Instagram account, she described his words as comforting and supportive. Her statement acknowledged both her husband’s support and the experiences of women encountering similar scrutiny.
