Early Sunday, as Austin woke up to streets glazed with ice and bitter cold, police were called to a central-city spot where a man was found lying outside and not moving. Austin-Travis County EMS arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene. The emergency call came in at 6:17 a.m., and the Austin Police Department has assigned its Homicide Unit to sort out what happened, even as the city continues to deal with the fallout from the winter storm that left roads icy and temperatures well below freezing.
According to KXAN, investigators say the case does not appear suspicious at this point. Detectives are looking at whether the man’s death may have been medical, weather-related, or a combination of both. Officers have been canvassing the area, pulling any available surveillance video, and talking to potential witnesses while crime scene specialists process the site.
Stormy conditions complicated response
The frigid backdrop was not a surprise to forecasters. The National Weather Service had already warned Central Texas residents to brace for freezing rain, icing, and a hard drop in temperatures over the weekend. Advisories called for readings plunging into the 20s and flagged slick bridges and hazardous travel conditions for Sunday morning, the same window when the 911 call came in.
Investigators say few details are available
Officials have not released the man’s name or the cause of death while detectives continue their on-scene and follow-up work. Austin-Travis County EMS provided the time of death as part of the investigation, according to the report. APD has asked anyone with information to contact investigators, and, per KXAN, the department has not indicated there is any ongoing threat to public safety.
