A 35-year-old man was shot and killed late Saturday on Chicago’s South Side, adding another grim entry to Avalon Park’s growing list of shootings, police said. Officers found the victim in the neighborhood, and he was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Area detectives have opened an investigation into the killing.
What the police say
According to police, the gunfire erupted a little before 10:30 p.m. in the 1600 block of East 85th Place. The 35-year-old man was shot in the back and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to FOX 32 Chicago. Authorities have not released his name and said no offenders were in custody as Area detectives worked the scene.
Avalon Park's recent shootings
The deadly shooting comes as Avalon Park continues to struggle with recurring gun violence. The neighborhood has been hit with repeated attacks in recent months and years, including a July 2025 incident that left a 16-year-old dead, as reported by ABC7 Chicago. Residents and anti-violence activists have told reporters the community is worn down by shootings that put constant pressure on families and first responders alike.
Investigation ongoing
Detectives with Area Two are leading the investigation, and police have not released any suspect descriptions or a possible motive, according to FOX 32 Chicago. The department said no arrests had been made at the time of the outlet’s report, and investigators were still canvassing the block for witnesses and surveillance footage.
