Residents and visitors in the Baltimore area can expect a mix of cold temperatures and minimal snowfall today, according to the National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC. The low-pressure system moving up from the south has decreased chances for precipitation, now pegged at a meager 15 percent in central VA and areas east of the Blue Ridge. Most areas are going to remain dry with a few flurries/sprinkles possible at times this afternoon to evening," the forecast discussion notes. Temperatures will struggle to climb, only hitting the mid to upper 30s throughout the day.
As we head into tonight, the weather is set to drop to even chillier conditions with lows dipping into the upper teens to mid-20s; clear skies can, however, be expected. Sunday welcomes a brief cold front with a subsequent high-pressure system trailing closely behind, ushering in dry and somewhat cooler weather with afternoon highs floating in the 30s to low 40s.
Looking ahead into next week, the weather narrative shifts towards a warming trend. An infusion of Pacific air will push temperatures up, likely leading to highs in the 50s and 60s towards the latter part of the week. Clouds will gather, but with little promise of significant rainfall. Possible showers might dot the Alleghenies from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, while later in the week, depending on the ultimate track of the system, some showers may be possible across the area later Thursday into Friday, but nearly all ensemble solutions keep any rain on the lighter side, according to the forecast guide from the National Weather Service.
Aviation forecasts remain optimistic with VFR (Visual Flight Rules) conditions expected through Monday, meaning general good visibility for air travel. Likewise, mariners should enjoy favorable conditions on the water, at least until Sunday afternoon, when a cold front could kick up the winds a bit. Both aviators and mariners, however, should be prepared for a shift in wind direction towards the south on Tuesday and then westerly winds by Wednesday.
