Baltimore residents can expect a mix of weather conditions in the coming days, starting with calm weather today and progressing to gusty conditions by Sunday. According to the National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC, high pressure will be in command today before shifting offshore by tonight. Baltimoreans will see the sunshine gradually take a backseat to cirrus clouds in the afternoon hours. The high temperatures are expected to reach the 50s, with southeast winds remaining light. By tonight, lows are anticipated to settle in the upper 30s to low 40s.
A warm front is set to lift over the area by Friday morning, creating the potential for sub-VFR conditions for aviators. Sub-VFR conditions are likely Friday and Saturday as a cold front and several waves of low pressure move across the area, states the National Weather Service. With the front's slow progression, residents should prepare to face a mix of low clouds, on-and-off light showers/drizzle, and breezy conditions for much of Friday. Southerly winds are anticipated to quickly ramp up, gusting around 20-25 mph, and even higher, up to 35-45 mph on the ridges.
As for mariners navigating the waters around Baltimore, today looks to be smooth sailing under high pressure. But come Friday, with southerly winds returning and increasing by Saturday, Small Craft Advisories might be in order. The National Weather Service warns, winds are likely to further increase Saturday as the pressure gradient over the Mid-Atlantic tightens in response to an approaching cold front. Rainfall will continue for most of the day Saturday, with temperatures remaining unseasonably high before a secondary, stronger cold front cuts through later in the night.
Looking ahead to the start of next week, a more typical winter chill is coming back to town. "A highly amplified synoptic pattern unfolds into next week, which also brings a return to near-average temperatures to the region, the National Weather Service foresees. Brisk winds are expected to accompany this shift, with westerly gusts reaching up to around 25 to 35 mph by Sunday. Gusts could peak even higher along the Allegheny Front. It's not until Monday that winds are predicted to simmer down, making way for clearer skies and continued brisk northwest winds.
