A Bellaire couple in their late 90s nearly lost a lifetime of memories when their 76-year-old wedding ring disappeared, but police say the treasured band is now back where it belongs, and the caregiver accused of stealing it is on the run.
Investigators allege the ring was one of several valuables that went missing while a home-health worker was on duty. Bellaire police say they tracked pawn activity linked to the suspect and recovered the ring, which has since been returned to the family. Relatives told KPRC Click2Houston they plan to pass the ring down to the couple's granddaughter.
Police have identified the suspect as 40-year-old Walter Portillo, who is wanted on theft charges. According to court records cited by KPRC Click2Houston, Portillo had been working for the couple since late July and sometimes covered overnight shifts. Detectives say cash, silver dollars, jewelry and silverware vanished around the holidays, and several of those items were later pawned at a shop on Bissonnet Street.
“No one would be aware of what’s happening when you’re asleep,” Det. Emily Aguirre said, explaining how overnight shifts can quietly open the door to a home. Det. Aguirre told KPRC Click2Houston that investigators believe there could be additional victims and urged anyone with information to step forward.
