A traffic incident on Kūhiō Highway has left a local bicyclist injured. The collision, involving a 2003 Toyota truck and a bicyclist, occurred as the truck driver was exiting a 7-Eleven parking lot in Līhu‘e and struck the 71-year-old man who was riding northbound on the highway, as reported by Kaua'i County.
The incident took place last Saturday, around 3 p.m., causing disruptions as one northbound lane of the highway was closed for an hour and a half, traffic backed up as the investigation unfolded. The Kauaʻi Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section took charge of the on-scene investigation to determine the cause of the impact. The bicyclist, notably not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, was subsequently transported to Wilcox Medical Center and was released after treatment for his injuries.
Further details obtained from the county's press release specified that the driver of the truck, a 50-year-old resident of Līhu‘e, did not sustain any injuries. Police have not released any additional information on potential contributing factors to the crash or whether any citations were issued at the scene.The Kauaʻi Police Department reiterated the importance of vigilance on the road and the ongoing investigation will seek to clarify this event's circumstances and prevent future occurrences.
