Body camera footage from a police-involved shooting in Essex that resulted in the death of 31-year-old Howard Sye was released by the Maryland Attorney General's Office. The incident took place in early December, and the footage provides further insights into the events that unfolded on the tragic day. According to FOX Baltimore, officers responded to a 911 call reporting a stabbing on December 3 in the 900 block of Holgate Drive.
As police arrived at the scene, they confronted Howard Sye, armed with a knife. The released footage reveals that Sye disregarded verbal commands from the officers before multiple officers discharged their weapons, striking him. Despite medical aid provided on site, Sye later succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the hospital. Details of the encounter and the bodycam footage can be viewed through a YouTube link provided by the authorities. An officer injured during the confrontation, released by the Attorney General's Office, was hospitalized for treatment.
The same incident left another victim hospitalized: Sye's sister, who was found in the apartment with a stab wound to her chest. Family members have expressed their shock at the outcome, with Howard's brother, Tabias Sye, stating to WMAR-2 News, "Normally, when they call me and they’re drinking and everything, it’s just, ‘Alright, it’ll end.' They argue. They go back and forth and that’ll be the end of it. It never went this far."
In the aftermath, the IID is diligently continuing its investigation into the shooting. The office is urging anyone with information regarding this incident to come forward and contact them directly. The officers involved have been reported by the Attorney General's Office to have had two or fewer years of service with the department.
