North and Northeast Portland schools are offering after-school music programs through a collaboration between BRAVO Youth Orchestras and Portland Parks & Recreation. Students receive instruction from experienced musicians, learning classical music through opportunities to play string instruments or participate in choir.
Students in the program are developing skills in areas such as posture, hand position, and musical technique. The initiative is supported by a grant from Portland’s Office of Arts & Culture, and Portland Parks & Recreation is providing space at SUN Community Schools for the after-school classes, creating a supportive environment for students and their families, according to the City of Portland.
As the program progresses, students move from practice sessions to performing at school assemblies and community events. Their instrumental and choral work allows them to demonstrate the skills they have developed, showcasing both individual progress and the collaborative results of the program.
BRAVO Youth Orchestras and Portland Parks & Recreation have provided opportunities for accessible arts education, creating a space where students can learn and develop their musical skills.
