The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has welcomed a new Deputy Commissioner for its Bureau of Conservation, Brian Clifford, a seasoned veteran within the department. As reported by the TDEC's official announcement, Clifford is stepping into the role following his recent stint as director of the Office of Outdoor Recreation, which he was instrumental in launching just two years ago in 2024 under the guidance of Gov. Bill Lee.
Clifford's efforts as the office's first-ever director have been significant, transforming the nascent idea into a formidable entity that emphasizes the enrichment of Tennessee's outdoor landscape. According to the TDEC announcement, Commissioner David W. Salyers praised Clifford, saying, "Brian’s vision and execution have taken the Office of Outdoor Recreation from a concept on paper to a successful program that is helping more Tennesseans experience and benefit from being outdoors." With a focus on broadening public access to natural settings, Clifford has overseen the growth of BluewaysTN initiative and has made significant contributions to the Governor’s Annual Rural Opportunity Summit, underscoring outdoor recreation, conservation, and natural resources as keystones of opportunity and quality of life, especially in rural sectors.
Upon his appointment, Clifford expressed his gratitude and eagerness to drive the bureau's mission forward. "I am grateful for this opportunity to help our amazing team in the Bureau of Conservation further their vital work and advance the governor’s belief in the importance of our great outdoors for all Tennesseans," he told TDEC. His tenure at TDEC began over a decade ago, where he served as an attorney, delivering legal counsel for the Bureau of Conservation before transitioning into leadership positions.
Before joining TDEC, the newly appointed deputy commissioner built his career practicing law in Nashville with respected firms such as Littler, and Waller Lansden Dortch and Davis LLP. Clifford, who holds a law degree from the University of Tennessee, is renowned not only for his professional expertise but also for his personal investment in outdoor activities as an enthusiastic kayaker and mountain biker. His own passions resonate with the initiatives he supports, ensuring a steadfast commitment to Tennesseans' quality of life through environmental conservation, stewardship, and economic growth balanced with the preservation of the great outdoors.
